Older Quake 1 mod issue

Hello everyone. I am a "newb" to this forum so please forgive me if I'm not posting this in the right place.
I am having an issue in running an older mod for Quake 1 called Xwar. I believe it was once intended to be a stand alone mod. but ended up being a weapons mod. Is anyone familiar with it??
I can't find my original download of the mod and have simply copied and pasted the folder and .exe into my Quake folder for years as I've updated. I am trying to play it on an outdated rig with the following:
XP Pro SP3
Radeon x1650 with the last certified drivers available for this old AGP card
1gb of ram
At first when I tried to play the game from the batch file or the .exe it would come up with crazy colors and no image at all, only sound. I then tried the following two command lines that were suggested from the Quakeone forums
-bpp 32
-window -no8bit
The -bpp 32 trick worked on many older engines and mods I have rattling around in my Quake folder such as Fqreal, but won't work with this one.
I've tried all of the various engines both old and new, but none will do anything but let me see the weapons and explosion effects in the opening movies, but will give me the following error when I try to start a new game:
CL_ParseTEnt: bad type
I'm not sure the mod didn't have its own engine??
If anyone is familiar with this old mod and can help me to get it running by itself or on a modern Quake engine I would be forever grateful.
Thanks for taking the time to look at this.
Jeff

The mod had its own engine (a modified TomazQuake with exclusive built-ins for the mod) and so you'd have to start it as

xwar.exe -game xwar -bpp 32 -window

GLQuake-based engines on modern hardware (Modern being "after 2002") tend to freak out a lot as GLQuake has some reaaaaaaaaaally low defaults.

That did the trick, other than the fact that with the improved textures I've installed it won't load. I've cured that with other mods by making a copy of my Quake folder as it is now, uninstalling and reinstalling Quake and then having a folder with the original textures. When I want the high textures I just swap the folders. If anyone has a trick here ?
Thanks for the help, this forum is great! :D
